The course “Global Governance and the UN system” is a post-graduate level introduction to the current international agenda. It aims at providing students with a broad theoretical and practical background in the field of global governance, which is potentially vast in application. In general, the course aims to help students gain a deeper appreciation of how the world of global governance works (or doesn’t).

The combination of both theoretical and practical parts will contribute to discovering the issue in depth. A range of theoretical perspectives on global governance is surveyed, mapping a shift from the classical principle of anarchy to one of complex governance. We will examine how global governance works in practice, with a focus on what is being governed, how and by whom, and the extent to which global governance objectives match outcomes when applied to major global challenges.
